Mothers who are in the process of choosing a day care center for child care, must be aware of recent changes in the law by the CPSC, a government safety agency. The law requires all child care facilities to replace all baby cribs. The choice of a child care facility has many different facets. It could be that you want it to be close to home, or maybe the size matters. Other factors are the qualifications of the people who are attending to your child. All of these factors are important. Baby cribs are of equal importance.
Courses offered through online education are flexible and quickly customized to fit the individual’s time. You can work hard in the daytime (and even at night if this is what your work demands of you) and come home to relax physically while fortifying your own mental capacities through online study.
There are general bits of advice that make sense. Call around uninvited to visit the creche. Get a real sense for how the place runs. Ask for confirmation that all the Montessori school teachers are fully trained in the Montessori method of education. A Creche in Cork we spoke to all confirmed that they had had their staff fully Garda vetted, which was excellent to hear. Not all Child Care Courses facilities can say this! Staff turnover in creches can be high. It’s always a good idea on your initial visit to ask one or two of the staff (ideally, not the one giving you the tour!) how long they have worked there. Anything more than 2 years could be an indication that it’s a nice place to work. Happy teachers and staff make for happy kids if you ask me!
Another big plus point is that you don’t have to worry about finance because you can continue to earn from your current career while you are planning for your new one. It may take one or more years to fully complete your studies, and this can be an expensive time if you choose to study full time at college. By being able to study at home and set your own hours to get the work done you will be able to focus on getting your new career while still benefiting from your current one.
Prepare as much as you can ahead of time. If you have never been around a baby, a Child Care Course can do some good. Texas Health Plano offers a total of 6 hours of Babycare/CPR classes for $75 per couple either weekday or Saturday. Prepare the nursery with supplies. Basics include diapers, wipes, diaper cream, and a lot of burp cloths (old wash cloths work great). A bottle warmer in the nursery can help so you don’t have to go all over the house in the middle of the night to prepare a bottle. Get a breast pump if you are breast feeding. It is very hard for a baby to suckle on engorged breasts. Lanolin for your nipples if you are breast feeding. Texas Health Plano also offers breastfeeding classes and support groups.
Will children still have the opportunity to learn through play? Will they still have the opportunity to be creative? This is so essential in their development. How will F/T Kindergarten affect the curriculum? Is there too much emphasis placed on organized activity and teacher-directed learning in a situation such as this, and will children tire of full-time school before they even enter the 12th grade? Where does this leave us in the future?
Because you will be taking care of children, there are laws in every state to become a child care provider. You need to contact the agency to find out what you need to do in order to become a certified provider. Most agencies will also put you on a referral list in case parents need help locating providers in the area.
